Collection: Venetian Glass Jewellery from Murano
In its opulence and the use of colour, this range of glass jewellery is representative of the best Venetian tradition of handmade glass art.
Glass-making has been an important economic activity in Venice from before the middle ages. In 1291 by decree of the Maggior Consiglio production of glass was moved from the densely-inhabited city to the nearby island of Murano to avoid the risk of fire.
Venetian glass workshops developed as small business units which fiercely guarded the secrets of their trade. Venetian glass was famous for its range of colours: at one time as many as 300 different colours were available.
Each bead of this lovely jewellery is slightly different from any other, as the composition of the glass and the conditions in which it is worked, affect colour and appearance.
The result is an exquisite unique peace with wonderful colours and beautiful unicity.
